The rhizarthrosis
& how we treat it

As rhizarthrosis is a wear of the thumb saddle joint called which often occurs due to years of overload or incorrect load.

Articular cartilage wear causes the joint surfaces to rub against each other. Symptoms of this usually occurring in advanced age wear are pain, restriction of freedom of movement but also loss of power when grasping objects. Nowadays, this pain can be eliminated or reduced with conservative or surgical treatments.

As a conservative treatment, the infiltration of the joint is available or the wearing of splints.

The operative therapy consists in the removal of the large polygonal bone (trapezium) and the suspension of the first middle hand bone by means of a tendon graft. The follow-up treatment then takes place with a plaster splint for 2 weeks and then by means of ambulatory hand therapy.
